Some common CBD questions

  • What exactly is CBD?

CBD - officially known as cannabidiol - is one of more than 100 cannabinoids (chemical compounds unique to cannabis) found in the hemp plant.

Other examples of cannabinoids include THC, CBN, and CBG, each with different properties and effects on the body.

Researchers are still working to study the properties of CBD (as well as other cannabinoids) which may have potential applications in combating anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, addiction, epilepsy, and cancer.

In 2018, Congress passed the Farm Bill specifying hemp-derived CBD was not a Controlled Substance under the Federal Act.

  • Will CBD get me "high" like THC?

No. THC is the plant compound with psychoactive properties that result in the traditional “high”, namely the intoxicated feeling and impairment.

CBD binds with our receptors differently and does not have these same psychoactive properties. In fact, researchers are investigating whether CBD might counteract some of the negative side-effects, like paranoia, that are associated with THC.

As always, it is important to note that CBD’s impact on the body can vary from person to person so talk to your healthcare provider first and start slow.

  • Are there different purities of CBD extracts?

Yes. We can think of extract purity in three categories depending on how many cannabinoids are present alongside the CBD.

    1. Full Spectrum CBD (least pure): Since this is derived using the full hemp plant, there are a variety of other cannabinoids mixed with the CBD (this may include CBN, CBG, and even trace amounts of THC).

    2. Broad Spectrum CBD: Same as Full Spectrum extract but it has been distilled to remove any THC. This extract can contain a broad range of cannabinoids, but not the full range since THC is removed.

    3. CBD Isolate (most pure): All other cannabinoids have been removed, only CBD remains (this means no CBN, CBG, THC, etc.). Otto’s Cider uses pure CBD Isolate
